Nixon Horrified That Jew Could Head FBI

Two months after the Watergate break-in, President Nixon already knew that FBI official W. Mark Felt was leaking information to reporters – because Nixon had his own spy at the FBI, an Oval Office tape reveals.

The tape also discloses that Nixon was shocked to learn Felt was Jewish and became horrified that a Jew could become head of the FBI.(Vanity Fair described Felt, whose ancestors were Irish, as claiming "no religious affiliation.")

In the conversation between Nixon and Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman, taped on Oct. 19, 1972, Haldeman mentions Felt by name and refers to Nixon’s spy as "our source."

And when Haldeman discusses Felt’s ambition to head the FBI, Nixon says, "Christ, put a Jew in there?"

It’s not the only time Nixon was taped making an anti-Semitic remark.

On the tape of a February 1972 conversation with evangelist Billy Graham – made public in February 2002 – Nixon complained that a number of major news publications were "dominated" by Jews, and Graham responded, "The stranglehold has got to be broken, or the country’s going to go down the drain."

Nixon: "You believe that?"

Graham: "Yes, sir."

Nixon: "So do I. I can’t ever say that, but I believe it."

Graham: "No, but if you get elected a second time, then we might be able to do something."

Later on the tape, after Graham left, Nixon told Haldeman, "The Jews are [an] irreligious, atheistic, immoral bunch of bastards."

The tape citing Felt as a leak mentions FBI Director L. Patrick Gray, whom Nixon had appointed after J. Edgar Hoover died – passing over Felt, who was expected to get the top job.

Here are excerpts from the tape:

Nixon: "Well, if they’ve got a leak down at the FBI, why the hell can’t Gray tell us what the hell is left. ...?"

Haldeman: "We know what’s left, and we know who leaked it."

Nixon: "Somebody in the FBI?"

Haldeman: "Yes, sir. Mark Felt. You can’t say anything about this because it will screw up our source and there’s a real concern. [Attorney General John] Mitchell is the only one who knows about this and he feels strongly that we better not do anything because ..."

Nixon: "Do anything? Never."

Haldeman: "If we move on him, he’ll go out and unload everything. He knows everything that’s to be known in the FBI. He has access to absolutely everything ..."

Nixon: "You know what I’d do with him, the bastard? Well that’s all I want to hear about it."

Haldeman: "I think he wants to be in the top spot."

Nixon: "That’s a hell of a way for him to get to the top. ... Is he Catholic?"

Haldeman: "Jewish."


Nixon: "Christ, put a Jew in there?"

Haldeman: "Well, that could explain it, too."

The one key part of this you are leaving out Pat, is Heinz Kissinger, the Zionist. The most trusting thing Nixon ever did and the worst mistake Nixon ever made was to let Kissinger into the oval office during his tenure. Nixon knew the Communists were Judaic Zionists and he later revealed, before anyone else did, that Israel had the A-bomb. Richard M. Nixon was morally and reputation wise and more, assassinated by Felt because President Nixon was his own man and not Israel's. Kissinger was the knife in Nixon's back - Felt was the point.


This is what happens when two Jews and a Quaker meet.

Sunday afternoon, June 17, the dunes


It is still. The camp waits, as if holding its breath. And then, out of the dry furnace air, a disembodied voice crackles over a loudspeaker.

"Come on, dogs," the voice booms in Arabic. "Where are all the dogs of Khan Younis? Come! Come!"

I stand up. I walk outside the hut. The invective continues to spew: "Son of a bitch!" "Son of a whore!" "Your mother's cunt!"

The boys dart in small packs up the sloping dunes to the electric fence that separates the camp from the Jewish settlement. They lob rocks toward two armored jeeps parked on top of the dune and mounted with loudspeakers. Three ambulances line the road below the dunes in anticipation of what is to come.

A percussion grenade explodes. The boys, most no more than ten or eleven years old, scatter, running clumsily across the heavy sand. They descend out of sight behind a sandbank in front of me. There are no sounds of gunfire. The soldiers shoot with silencers. The bullets from the M-16 rifles tumble end over end through the children's slight bodies. Later, in the hospital, I will see the destruction: the stomachs ripped out, the gaping holes in limbs and torsos.

Yesterday at this spot the Israelis shot eight young men, six of whom were under the age of eighteen. One was twelve. This afternoon they kill an eleven-year-old boy, Ali Murad, and seriously wound four more, three of whom are under eighteen. Children have been shot in other conflicts I have covered—death squads gunned them down in El Salvador and Guatemala, mothers with infants were lined up and massacred in Algeria, and Serb snipers put children in their sights and watched them crumple onto the pavement in Sarajevo—but I have never before watched
soldiers entice children like mice into a trap and
murder them for sport.
